It seems all too common that the person most critical of ourselves is us. This toughness can make it hard when trying new things and even harder when mistakes are made or goals are not achieved.
What would happen if instead of criticizing yourself for mistakes, you praise yourself for your efforts?
There are have plenty of people who are willing to criticize you, but the best way for you to move forward, achieve your goals and dreams, is to celebrate your wins – not beat yourself up for your losses.
Be your biggest fan. Scream and cheer for yourself when you win! Here’s how to turn yourself from your toughest critic into your biggest fan:
1. Notice your criticism.
The first step is noticing your thoughts, realizing when you’re being self-critical. Once you have that done this it becomes much easier to shift and change them.
2. Reset.
If you find that you’re being hard on yourself, perhaps upset that you procrastinated or made a mistake or didn’t do what was best, then it’s time to reset your mind. Do something to pause and reset your line of thinking. This could be going outside for a walk, taking a hot shower, going for a run, anything that pulls you into the present and takes you out of your mind.
3. Put things into Perspective.
As you reset, think about the bigger picture. Will you still care about this in one month, one year, five years? How important is this really?
4. List the positives.
Once you have reset your mind. Start thinking about the positive qualities of yourself or the situation. Make a list and write them down.
5. Focus on your reason why.
Remind yourself of the reason why you’re doing whatever you’re doing. What goal are you trying to accomplish? What is your reason for it? Is this goal something that will bring you joy and make you happy? WIll it help yourself or help others? What is the reason that makes all your efforts worth it?
Focus on this reason, your “why” for your goals. Maybe write it down and put it somewhere you can see, or say it out loud to yourself, do something to remember what drives you in your endeavors.
6. List all your successes.
You can go back to the very beginning of when you set your goal. Write out every single thing you’ve done so far that you’ve accomplished and been successful at. You might be surprised by how long the list gets.
7. Plan your path to success.
Make a list of everything you need to do to achieve your goals. What is everything that’s left that needs to happen to get you to your goal? Break it into small steps. Think about what you need to do these steps? Do you need materials, help from others, something else?
8. Schedule your plan.
Add to your calendar when you are going to take the steps you need to do to accomplish your goal. Putting it in your calendar creates more accountability to yourself, helping you to stay on track. It soothes the mind, knowing you have a concrete plan in place and takes the stress away since you don’t need to think about when or what you’re going to do to reach your goal.
9. Reward yourself!
Plan rewards or a way to celebrate when you achieve small steps. Maybe it’s a night off with friends, a relaxing hot bath, time outdoors, or your favorite dessert! Give yourself something to look forward to when you’ve accomplished your work!
10. Enjoy success!
Revel in the feeling of when you have won, when you make steady steps to accomplishing your goals. Really take the time to tell yourself the truth about what you’ve accomplished. That you’ve worked hard and have made progress. Honor yourself for your wins. Give yourself this gift!
11. Focus on your positive qualities.
Call positive qualities of yourself to your mind daily. Focus on what you want more of from yourself, not what you want less of. If you focus on what you want less of, you’ll get upset every time you see it. But if you focus on what you want more of, you’ll get excited every time it shows up. Doing this will help you shift your mind to a more positive light.
There you have it! There are all 11 steps to shifting your view of yourself.
