First…
If you’re reading this you probably have some resolutions for the new year, or you’re thinking about making some. Consider your resolutions and ask yourself are they actually something you want to do?
Seriously.
Many people tend to pick New Year resolutions that are things they feel they “should” do, but don’t actually want to do. This is a giant pitfall from the start because it’s extremely difficult to follow through on goals that you don’t want to do. If you don’t actually want to do your resolution, don’t make it your resolution.
Instead of picking a “should” resolution make it a “want” resolution.
For example, I recognize I’m out of shape and a “should” resolution would be “I will exercise more.” This is a should because I don’t like making time to exercise, I enjoy other things much more than exercising, and I really just feel like it is something I should do. But to make it a want resolution, I could change it to “I will be more in shape and healthier this year.” This is a much better goal because I actually do want to be more in shape and healthier, thus giving me the motivation to set aside time for exercising.
Make all your resolutions wants and not shoulds.
Once you have your resolutions, write them down.
Writing them down starts to make them more physical, not just ideas or lofty goals but things you actually intend to do for the next year.
Think about what you need and what needs to be done to accomplish your goals.
Do you need to set aside time, help from others, or other resources? What smaller steps need to be taken? Is it done gradually or all at once? What other aspects need to be considered?
Once you know what needs to be done, put action steps into your calendar.
Plan out what days you’ll do each step or give yourself time frames to get steps done by.
Putting it in your calendar is really important so that these resolutions are something you remember for the rest of the year. It is all too easy to come up with them, think about them for a couple of weeks and then forget about them for the next 11 months.
Putting steps in your calendar also makes it much easier to succeed because all that’s left is for you to actually do it. All the planning has been done already.
To recap the three steps to success are:
Want Resolutions + Planning + Scheduling
Doing these three thing will make accomplishing your resolutions much easier, because now you have a stronger desire to follow through, you know what needs to be done, and you’ve already planned out how and when you will get it done. All that’s left now is doing it.
Celebrate your wins!
As you complete your action steps to reach your goals, celebrate! Recognize your accomplishments and wins. You are making changes in your life and that is worthy of celebration and acknowledgment.
